Our Story

Silvia Planas Prats and her family lived in the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain, when their son, Marc, was born. A joyful child with Autism and high support needs, Marc struggled in a system unprepared for his unique challenges. Misunderstood by schools and the community, Silvia and her family felt increasingly isolated. One pivotal morning, while working as an executive at DuPont, Silvia candidly shared Marc’s struggles with a colleague. This moment sparked a life-changing conversation about the better Autism support available in the U.S.

Determined to give Marc the opportunities he deserved, Silvia and her husband made the difficult decision to leave behind their home and family, as well as Silvia’s successful career. They moved to Miami, Florida, where Autism interventions were more advanced, and found a welcoming, supportive community. This brave leap gave Marc the resources he needed, and it marked the beginning of Silvia’s deep commitment to advocating for individuals with Autism.

Our Mission

A Mission of Kindness and Opportunity

At MIAMI IS KIND, we create opportunities for professionals with Autism & disAbilities while crafting delicious traditional treats. Our journey began in October 2015 with a humble yet ambitious goal: to demonstrate that with the right support, individuals with Autism & disAbilities can thrive in the workplace and contribute to the profitability of their employers. Our first product line, gluten-free and deliciously healthy macaroons, embodies this mission. Starting with two bakers educated in Bakery & Pastry Arts, we expanded our team to include two more bakers in December 2015 and a fifth baker by February 2016. This growth is a testament to the potential within each of our team members. With adequate instruction, a properly structured workplace, and a solid business foundation, we have shown that individuals with Autism & disAbilities can excel and drive success. But our vision extends beyond baking. We aim to employ packers, warehouse operators, maintenance crew, customer service representatives, and dispatchers. This social revolution is designed to bring job opportunities and hope to many adults with Autism & disAbilities in Miami. Our success has sparked inspiration, encouraging many companies to adopt similar inclusive practices. It’s an unstoppable movement! Together, let’s put Autism & disAbilities to work and create a kinder, more inclusive community. You buy, we employ. It’s easy. It’s kind. All proceeds go to education and salaries for adults with Autism & disAbilities. Join us in this mission and witness the power of kindness in action.

Every day became a battle of navigating Marc’s unpredictable behaviors, which transformed her life into one of constant crisis and adaptation. Yet, amid the chaos, she found moments of joy through playful interactions with Marc, which provided comfort and connection.
